This Saturday come see some horse plowing in McMinnville!

Saturday, April 9, at the Yamhill Valley Heritage Center - from 10:30am – 3:00 pm, with a parade of teams at 2:00 pm. Cost is $3 per person, free for kids 12 and under. 11275 SW Durham Ln., (corner of Hwy 18 and Durham Ln.), just west of McMinnville. www.yamhillcountyhistory.org Bring the family and come on out!

(thanks for the photo jess)

So Saturday I took my boys over to duane's house to get ready for this coming weekend and try out my new plow - and let's just say I felt far less than ready for lots of reasons that would take way to long to explain here ... but we'll just have a go at it and just have fun -- so this coming Saturday I'll be at the Yamhill County History Museum with about 18 other teams in a plowing competition. In addition to watching the draft horses work the ground, there will be sawmill, blacksmith and horseshoeing demonstrations, pioneer kids’ activities, music, food and lots of old tractors on display... should be a very fun day

in the mean time around the farm it sure is looking like spring.. the grass is going bananas! Freddie is doing well and the daffodils are out in full force - which is so very nice...

Last but not least my washer stopped working last week right after we got home (when of course I had lots of laundry to do) and my handy husband took a look at it for me and found the culprit all these things where lodged int he drain... uhhh mummm -- well ... I guess I need to be better about emptying pockets before i chuck things in..

thankfully it's back up and running... so most items where easily identified but there was one that was a bit of a mystery I'm pretty sure I figured out what it is and I even think I know who owns it ...

but I'd like to make a bit of a game out of it with the winner getting a bottle of Big Table Farm wine - so your job is to identify the object below in the comments ...
(hint --you can see the scale of it above it's in the upper top left side of the plate)

  1. A bottle of wine? I 'll bite! I am guessing a sharpening tool although I would want to see it in person to be sure. Looks like a specialty item for something small like felco pruners or even smaller (shaped carving chisels? Fishhooks?)

    cheers, Laura

  2. I think it looks like stylus for a game. Though it does appear to be metal, so perhaps it is part of a halter/or rein?

  3. maybe a clay sculpting tool? I was thinking a tube riveting tool, but the left end makes me think clay. :)

  4. "it's for her harness, for punching leather or wood", says I.

"no no", says he, and asks,
    "Does Clare smoke cigars?"

I like that image so much
I think we'll go with it.

  5. Wow! So thrilled to see horse plowing. I farm on Chehalem Mountain and have been trying to get our neighbour to consider horse plowing. We found someone who was willing to give it a go w/her horses-- but alas, could not locate a plow....
    Thanks for your wonderful blog.

  9. Is it the doohickey you use to sketch on that special white paper? Man, I wish I knew more about art supplies. I want to say graphite paper, but it's about rubbing and etching with fine lines.

There's my guess. I hope I can come out to McMinnville this weekend to see you compete.

  10. Clare, have a great time this weekend. I know you look forward to this all year. If the government shuts down I might just have to drive up and see you. As far as the mystery item: I am sticking to my original idea that it is a retractable stylus for a smart phone but not a Treo. Perhaps a Sprint HTC Mogul XV6800 or at least that is what google produced in the form of images that match. Googling is allowed for this competition right?

  11. Yeah Clare have a blast this weekend - this is definitely one of those traditions that have become part of you and BT. Still gotta catch up with you about your latest trip South! I'm a guessin' that li'l thing is what you use to make your etchings of the animals with - don't you dip or drag it through a medium which you then use to draw those beautiful fine creatures?

  14. Its a stylus used for a variety of hand held devices such as phones and gaming systems. Some are used for simple organizers as well.

  16. We're guessing it's the remains of the Nintendo DSi stylus that Eoin perhaps left behind during our visit. Funny he hasn't reported it missing, now it makes sense why he's growing and sharpening his pinky fingernail.
